Paternayan Color Usage and Canvas Calculations

Knitting:
If you are using Paternayan to make a sweater you can figure that an uncut 1/4 lb is 4oz. or 101.6 gram and approximately 167 yards or 154 meters.

Needlepoint:
If you are using Paternayan for a needlepoint canvas, then you need to calculate the proper number of strands for each color using the correct number of plies.
The following instructions and table (at the bottom of the page) explain how Paternayan Persian Yarn covers the various canvas sizes.  Each strand of Paternayan contains 3 plies of wool and will cover the amount of canvas indicated in the chart.  Sometimes the stitch you use and your personal style make a difference when you switch from 1 to 2 or all 3 plies as well as the total area covered when you work the canvas, but in general this table should give the proper amount of yarn needed
To determine how much yarn you need do the following:

Measure the number of square inches of each color used in the canvas (we usually add 10% to 20% for ends and color changes).  Measuring the various colors is the most difficult part and is easier if you use a clear template that is 1" by 1".  Move the 1square inch template around the canvas determining the total square inches of each color.  Multiply the number of square inches for a color times the length of yarn needed to cover 1 square inch of canvas (from the chart belowthen divide the total length of yarn by 32" (the length of one 3 ply strand)  - this equals the number of strands you need to cover this color.  If the number of plies on the chart is less than 3, divide the number of strands by 3 and multiply that number times the number of plies used for the canvas size, from the chart below.  Finally increase the number of strands by 20%.

For example:
A color covers 15 sq inches on a  #14 mesh canvas.
(15sq. in. X 42 in. per sq. in. ) = 630 in.
630 in.  / 32 in. per strand = 19.8 Strands

 But #14 canvas only uses 2 of the three plies, so;

(19.8 strands / 3 plies per strand ) X 2 plies  = 13.2 Strands

Note: You use 2 of the 3 plies and combine the third ply from 2 strands you have separated to make another 2 ply strand.

Add 20%:
13.2 strands *1.2 = 15.8 Strands.

Order 16 strands to cover this color on a #14 mesh canvas.

I hope this makes sense.

Quantity of Paternayan to cover 1 square inch of canvas
Canvas # of Plies Length to cover 1 sq. in.
# 10 3 48"
# 12 2 38"
#14 2 42"
#18 1 25"
